Islamabad: Pakistani health authorities Thursday reported two cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) from Wah Cantt, a suburban area near Islamabad. According to officials from the Federal Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, both patients experienced mild symptoms and have since fully recovered.

The samples were sent to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad, where the presence of HMPV was confirmed through testing. The Ministry of NHS,R&C emphasized that there is no major outbreak of HMPV in Islamabad or its surrounding areas, but the detection highlights the importance of ongoing surveillance.

Health officials noted that HMPV cases have been reported sporadically in Pakistan, particularly in urban centers like Islamabad, Karachi and other major cities of the country. The NIH has been testing all flu-related samples for HMPV as part of its routine influenza surveillance.

Medical experts have reassured the public that HMPV is not a cause for alarm. They recommend adopting the same preventive measures as for common colds and influenza, including hand hygiene, avoiding close contact with infected individuals, and seeking medical advice if symptoms worsen.

The presence of HMPV in Pakistan was officially acknowledged during a recent session of the National Assembly. Parliamentary Secretary for Health Dr. Darshan Lal confirmed its detection and stated that the virus has been identified in the country.

HMPV, a respiratory virus first identified in 2001, can cause symptoms ranging from mild cold-like issues to severe respiratory illness in vulnerable populations, including children and the elderly. Experts continue to monitor its spread and impact globally.

The NIH, a key institution for disease surveillance in Pakistan, is urging citizens to remain vigilant and report unusual respiratory symptoms to healthcare providers.
