Islamabad: Torrential monsoon rains continue to wreak havoc across Pakistan, with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) reporting on Saturday that 151 people lost their lives in the past 24 hours alone. Since the onset of monsoon in Pakistan on June 26, 645 people have been killed while 905 have been injured.
The latest figures reveal that the death toll since the onset of the monsoon season on June 26 has climbed to 645, while 905 people have been injured.
According to NDMA, the majority of casualties in the last 24 hours were reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where 144 people died, including 124 men, 16 women and 11 children. Punjab recorded 7 deaths during the same period. In addition, 137 people were injured across the country, among them 107 men, 20 women and 10 children.
The authority added that rains also caused damage to 50 houses in different regions, while 110 livestock animals were killed.
Cumulative data from June 26 to August 16 shows that 383 deaths were reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, followed by 164 in Punjab, 28 each in Sindh and Gilgit-Baltistan, 20 in Balochistan, 14 in Azad Jammu & Kashmir, and 8 in Islamabad Capital Territory. Among the deceased nationwide were 382 men, 93 women, and 170 children.
NDMA’s cause-of-death analysis reveals that flash floods have been the deadliest factor, accounting for 51.7 percent of fatalities. House collapses followed with 32.6 percent of deaths, while drowning incidents were responsible for 8.5 percent. Smaller proportions were linked to landslides, electrocution, lightning, and heavy rain-related accidents.
Officials warned that the continued intensity of monsoon rains could worsen the crisis further, urging provincial and local administrations to stay alert and step up relief and rescue operations in vulnerable areas.
