Karachi: Sindh Government Qatar Hospital has resumed advanced laparoscopic surgeries and for the first time successfully performed a laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair on a 58-year-old patient, marking a major milestone in the hospital’s medical history.
The complex but successful procedure was led by senior surgeon Dr. Syed Ahmed Sultan along with his team. Doctors explained that with advancing age, abdominal walls become weak, increasing the risk of hernia. Conventional open surgery often raises the chances of developing an incisional hernia later, which is why a mesh was used in this case to strengthen the abdominal wall and provide long-term support.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Rashid Siraj Khanzada said that instead of the traditional open method, a minimally invasive laparoscopic procedure was adopted. This modern technique avoids large incisions by introducing fine instruments through the navel, offering less pain, faster recovery, and significantly reduced risk of infection.
He added that laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair involves only a small cut, with the operation carried out using a camera. Patients require shorter hospital stays, recover more quickly, do not carry visible surgical scars, and are less prone to complications such as incisional hernia. The patient’s condition after the operation is reported to be stable and improving rapidly.
Until now, Qatar Hospital was only performing laparoscopic gallbladder surgeries, but with this breakthrough, more complex laparoscopic procedures are now possible.
Dr. Khanzada said that laparoscopic appendectomy and other general surgeries will soon be introduced at the hospital to provide safe and modern healthcare facilities to the public. He called the achievement a ray of hope for patients, noting that with the use of advanced technology, recovery is faster and lives can be restored with minimal risk.
