Rising Pharmacists sweep Islamabad, AJK and GB polls as PPA Centre sees strong challenge to PPG

Islamabad: The Pakistan Pharmacists Association (PPA) has completed its 2025 elections, with the Rising Pharmacists Pakistan Panel emerging as the dominant force in the Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan branch and also making a major breakthrough at the PPA Centre level, according to official notifications issued by Chief Election Convener Najam ul Hassan Jawa.

At the PPA Centre, Rao Alamgir of the Professional Pharmacists Group (PPG) has been elected president, while the Rising Pharmacists Panel, contesting the Centre elections for the first time, secured 10 of the 24 seats against PPG’s 14, signalling a clear shift in professional support after decades of one sided electoral dominance.

The Rising Pharmacists Panel’s strongest showing came in the Islamabad, AJK and GB branch elections, where it secured all 24 contested seats in what office bearers described as a landslide. The panel is led by Sardar Shabbir Ahmed, whose growing influence was reflected not only in the scale of the branch victory but also in the panel’s expanding footprint at the Centre level.

In the Islamabad, AJK and GB branch, Khakan Babar was elected president, while Dr Ghayour Ahmed was elected vice president. The notification also lists Muhammad Azizullah Khan as general secretary and Shafaat Hussain as joint secretary. Other notified office bearers include Gulzaib Khan, Wajed Ahmed Qureshi, Dr Waseem Ali Tikka and Dr Mahvash Ansari.

At the PPA Centre level, the election convener’s notification lists the members of the newly elected executive committee, including provincial and women representatives, and notes that under the PPA constitution, the immediate past president becomes part of the next executive committee and serves as senior vice president. In that context, Sardar Shabbir Ahmed, as immediate past president, has been notified as a member of the executive committee and will act as senior vice president for the new term. The notification further states that Alamgir Rao, as immediate past general secretary, will also be a member of the Centre executive committee.

The latest results underscore a sharper and more competitive landscape within the pharmacists’ community, with the Rising Pharmacists Panel gaining prominence through decisive wins in the capital region branch and significant seat share at the Centre.

Pharmacists are a key part of the healthcare delivery system and a major stakeholder in Pakistan’s pharmaceutical sector. The PPA, as the representative body of pharmacists, is expected to play a central role in professional development, strengthening pharmacy practice, and advocating for patient safety and the rational use of medicines.

The newly elected leadership at Centre and branch levels is expected to assume responsibilities for the 2025 to 2027 term following completion of procedural formalities.
