Karachi: The emergence of mpox cases in Sindh has raised serious public health concerns, with official figures revealing gaps in surveillance, preparedness, and response to the infectious disease.
According to the Sindh Health Department, a total of 122 suspected cases have been reported across the province as of April 14, 2026, of which 25 have been laboratory-confirmed, while nine deaths have been recorded.
Health authorities reported that two new cases were detected during the past 24 hours, including one each from Karachi and Khairpur, indicating continued transmission and the potential risk of further spread.
Data released by the provincial health department shows that Khairpur remains the worst-affected district, accounting for 18 confirmed cases. Sukkur has reported three confirmed infections, while Karachi has recorded four cases, highlighting the geographical spread of the disease across multiple districts of Sindh.
Public health experts view the reported fatalities as alarming, emphasizing the need for stronger disease surveillance, timely diagnosis, and effective containment measures. They stress that early detection and rapid response are critical to preventing outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases such as mpox.
In response to the evolving situation, the Sindh Health Department has initiated a series of emergency measures. These include the establishment of isolation wards in all district headquarters and major hospitals, as well as the implementation of a coordinated system for the timely transportation and testing of samples.
Authorities have also activated Disease Surveillance and Response Units across the province to strengthen monitoring and containment efforts. Additional interventions include contact tracing of infected individuals and healthcare workers, strict enforcement of infection prevention and control protocols, sterilization of medical equipment, and active case searches in affected areas.
Officials stated that these steps are aimed at containing the spread of the virus and ensuring prompt treatment of patients while minimizing the risk of further transmission.
The Sindh Health Department has urged both the public and healthcare professionals to strictly follow precautionary measures. Citizens have been advised to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms appear, while special care has been recommended in handling and protecting newborns.
Health experts underline that sustained vigilance, transparent reporting, and a robust public health response will be essential to controlling the outbreak and preventing further loss of life.
