Karachi: The Indus Hospital and Health Network’s Indus Diabetes and Endocrinology Centre (IDEC) in Karachi has been recognized as an International Diabetes Federation (IDF) Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care for 2026-27, becoming one of the few institutions in the region to receive the international accreditation for meeting global standards in diabetes prevention, treatment, education and patient care.
According to the certificate issued by the International Diabetes Federation and the IDF School of Diabetes, the centre fulfilled the federation’s requirements and was approved as an “IDF Centre of Excellence in Diabetes Care.” The certification is valid until December 2027 and reflects compliance with internationally accepted benchmarks for the management of diabetes and related endocrine disorders.
The recognition comes at a time when Pakistan is facing one of the world’s highest diabetes burdens. According to the International Diabetes Federation, more than 34 million adults in Pakistan are living with diabetes, placing enormous pressure on the country’s healthcare system and increasing the need for specialized centres capable of providing comprehensive diabetes care.
The Indus Diabetes and Endocrinology Centre has emerged as one of Pakistan’s leading facilities for diabetes management, offering clinical services, patient education, screening programmes, prevention initiatives and treatment for complications associated with the disease. The centre also plays a role in training healthcare professionals and promoting evidence-based diabetes care.
The accreditation is expected to strengthen the centre’s standing as a referral facility for diabetes and endocrine disorders and facilitate greater collaboration with international diabetes experts and institutions.
The centre is led by Prof Dr Abdul Basit, one of Pakistan’s most prominent diabetologists and a widely respected figure in the field of diabetes care and research. Over the past three decades, he has been associated with several landmark studies on diabetes prevalence, risk factors and prevention in Pakistan and has played a key role in shaping national diabetes policies and awareness programmes.
Prof Abdul Basit has served in various leadership positions in national and international diabetes organizations and has been actively involved in promoting early diagnosis, lifestyle modification and improved access to diabetes care across the country. His work has contributed significantly to understanding the scale of diabetes in Pakistan and highlighting the urgent need for preventive interventions.
The International Diabetes Federation is a global umbrella organization representing diabetes associations in more than 160 countries and territories. Through its Centre of Excellence programme, the federation evaluates healthcare facilities against defined standards covering clinical care, patient education, multidisciplinary services, quality improvement and professional training before granting accreditation.
