Imran Khan receives 5th eye treatment, condition improving: PIMS

Islamabad: Former prime minister and PTI founder Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi was brought to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) on Monday for a scheduled follow-up eye treatment, where doctors administered his fifth intravitreal injection after medical examinations indicated clinical improvement in his condition.

According to a statement issued by the PIMS administration, the 74-year-old inmate of Adiala Jail underwent the procedure as part of ongoing treatment for an eye condition that has required a series of intravitreal injections.

Hospital officials said ophthalmologists examined Imran Khan before the procedure and found him clinically stable. An Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scan, performed prior to the treatment, reportedly showed improvement in the affected eye, prompting doctors to proceed with the next scheduled dose.

The intravitreal injection, which involves delivering medication directly into the eye, was administered under standard operating procedures in the operation theatre after obtaining informed consent and carrying out all required precautionary measures.

PIMS officials said the procedure was performed under microscopic guidance by specialist surgeons and was completed as a day-care intervention without complications.

Hospital authorities maintained that the former premier remained vitally stable before, during and after the procedure. Following post-procedure observation, he was discharged and sent back with medical advice, follow-up instructions and relevant treatment documents.

The latest procedure marks the fifth intravitreal injection administered to Imran Khan as part of his ongoing ophthalmic treatment. While PIMS did not disclose the exact diagnosis or medication used, intravitreal injections are commonly employed in the management of retinal diseases, including diabetic eye disease, retinal vein occlusion and age-related macular degeneration.

The medical update comes amid continued public and political interest in the health status of the incarcerated PTI founder, who remains lodged in Adiala Jail while facing multiple legal proceedings.

Officials did not indicate when the next follow-up examination would take place, but sources familiar with the treatment process said patients receiving serial intravitreal injections are usually monitored periodically to assess response and determine the need for further doses.

The PIMS administration said Imran Khan completed the treatment visit without any medical complications and was discharged in stable condition after the procedure.
