Hyderabad: Utilizing existing resources instead of seeking additional funds, Liaquat University Hospital (LUH) Hyderabad has launched a series of new healthcare initiatives, including a Burn Intensive Care Unit (BICU), a Nephrology High Dependency Unit (HDU), a modern CT scan facility, a modular operation theatre, a 24-hour pharmacy, an RO water filtration plant and expanded pulmonology services, officials said on Tuesday.
Hospital officials said the projects were completed through improved planning, administrative reforms and more efficient utilization of available infrastructure and manpower, strengthening critical care, diagnostic, surgical, nephrology, respiratory and patient support services for people from Hyderabad and at least 15 districts of Sindh who rely on the hospital for specialized treatment.
Medical Superintendent Dr Ershad Kazmi announced that a Burn Intensive Care Unit was being established following the inauguration of the Nephrology High Dependency Unit at the hospital’s City Campus.
He said the initiatives were aimed at strengthening patient care and expanding access to specialized services for the people of Hyderabad and surrounding districts.
The hospital administration has recently completed or initiated several projects, including the installation of a modern CT scan facility, establishment of the Nephrology HDU, procurement and installation of a modular operation theatre equipped with an advanced Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system, and a Reverse Osmosis water filtration plant capable of providing around 5,000 gallons of safe drinking water daily to patients, attendants and hospital staff.
Dr Ershad Kazmi said a dedicated 24-hour birth dose vaccination centre was also being established to ensure newborns receive life-saving vaccines around the clock.
In addition, the hospital has introduced a state-of-the-art software-driven 24/7 pharmacy in its ICU Block to ensure uninterrupted access to medicines for critically ill patients.
The administration has also established a Complaints and Facilitation Centre and a Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) desk to improve patient services and administrative efficiency.
“The Pulmonology Unit is also being expanded from 19 to 30 beds, significantly increasing the hospital’s capacity to provide specialized respiratory care,” Dr Kazmi said.
The Burn Intensive Care Unit is expected to address a longstanding shortage of specialized burn care services in Hyderabad and surrounding districts, while the Nephrology HDU will provide enhanced monitoring and treatment for critically ill kidney disease patients requiring specialized care.
The newly installed CT scan facility is expected to improve diagnostic capabilities and reduce waiting times for patients, while the modular operation theatre and HVAC system are aimed at strengthening infection prevention and patient safety standards during surgical procedures.
The RO water filtration plant has been established to provide safe drinking water to thousands of patients and attendants visiting the hospital daily. Hospital officials said the facility would help address longstanding concerns regarding access to clean drinking water within the hospital premises.
According to information shared by the hospital administration, the CT scan machine remained non-functional for nearly three years before efforts were undertaken to make it operational.
Similarly, work has been completed on a modern water filtration system, while the modular operation theatre and HVAC system have also been installed to upgrade surgical services.
Hospital officials said the developments demonstrate how improved management and more effective utilization of available resources can strengthen healthcare delivery even in a resource-constrained environment.
As one of Sindh’s largest tertiary care teaching hospitals, Liaquat University Hospital serves a vast population across southern and central Sindh.
The addition of the Burn Intensive Care Unit, Nephrology HDU, CT scan facility, modular operation theatre, RO water plant, vaccination centre, 24-hour pharmacy, Complaints and Facilitation Centre, CRVS desk and expanded pulmonology services is expected to improve access to specialized healthcare for patients across the region.
