Karachi: The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at National Institute of Health has confirmed Pakistan’s 70th wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case of 2024 in a male child from Karachi East, with the onset reported on December 21. This marks the second polio case from Karachi East this year.

The year has seen an alarming resurgence of polio, with 27 cases reported in Balochistan, 21 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 20 in Sindh, and one each in Punjab and Islamabad.

Parents are urged to ensure their children under five are vaccinated during the upcoming nationwide polio campaign, scheduled from February 3 to 9, 2025, to protect them from this debilitating disease.
