Pakistan launches national medical tourism initiative

Islamabad: Health authorities unveiled the National Medical Tourism Initiative during the 30th Annual International Conference of the Pakistan Association of Plastic Surgeons (PAPS), positioning Pakistan as a regional hub for high-quality and cost-effective plastic and reconstructive surgery.

The conference highlighted Pakistan’s growing stature in plastic, reconstructive, burn, and aesthetic surgery, reinforcing its potential as a promising destination for medical tourism.

Launched under the auspices of the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), the initiative aims to promote advanced yet affordable surgical care for international patients, attract foreign investment, strengthen healthcare infrastructure, and enhance the country’s global standing in specialized medical services.

Held in Islamabad from April 10 to 12, 2026, the three-day international conference brought together more than 400 delegates, including over a dozen renowned global experts, leading plastic surgeons, and trainees from across Pakistan. The event served as a major platform for academic exchange, innovation, and international collaboration in the fields of plastic, reconstructive, burn, and aesthetic surgery.

The conference showcased the capabilities of leading Pakistani medical institutions, including PIMS, Aga Khan University Hospital, Shifa International Hospital, Mayo Hospital Lahore, Liaquat National Hospital, and Combined Military Hospitals. Their participation underscored Pakistan’s strong clinical expertise, skilled workforce, and adherence to international standards.

The scientific programme featured research-based paper presentations, state-of-the-art lectures, live surgical workshops, and masterclasses covering a wide spectrum of modern plastic surgery techniques. A dedicated parallel track on non-invasive aesthetic procedures included sessions on Botox, fillers, thread lifts, fat grafting, and energy-based technologies.

Distinguished international faculty from Germany, China, Egypt, Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Serbia, and Argentina participated in the sessions, reflecting strong global engagement and fostering professional collaboration.

Major healthcare institutions from across Pakistan—including Jinnah Hospital, Services Hospital Lahore, Hayatabad Medical Complex, Nishtar Hospital Multan, and other leading teaching hospitals—were represented, highlighting nationwide academic participation and unity within the specialty.

The event also received academic support from the National University of Medical Sciences (NUMS) and Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU), which facilitated continuing medical education and professional development opportunities for participants.

The conference concluded with the induction of new PAPS leadership and reaffirmed Pakistan’s growing role in advancing surgical excellence, strengthening international cooperation, and promoting medical tourism in the region.
