Pakistani doctor elected President of Federation of Islamic Medical Associations

Islamabad: Pakistan’s medical community has received a major recognition at the international level as Prof. Dr. Muhammad Iqbal Khan, Vice Chancellor of Shifa Tameer-e-Millat University, Islamabad, has been elected President of the Federation of Islamic Medical Associations (FIMA) for the term 2025–27.

The Pakistan Islamic Medical Association (PIMA) announced the development on Friday, terming it a matter of great pride and honor not only for the association but also for the country. “We thank Allah Almighty for this recognition at the international level. We pray for Allah’s wisdom, strength, and barakah in his service to the Muslim ummah in the field of medicine,” PIMA said in a congratulatory message.

A graduate of medicine with multiple fellowships, including from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and England, Prof. Iqbal Khan is also a Fellow of the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP) and holds a Masters in Health Professions Education from Maastricht University, Netherlands.

Prof. Iqbal Khan previously served in the UK’s National Health Service in academic, research, and clinical positions. In Pakistan, he has held leading roles as Professor and Head of Surgery, Vice Principal at Riphah International University, Dean at AJK and Shifa Tameer-e-Millat universities, and founder of AJK Medical College. He also served as the Director of FIMA’s Center for Islamic Medicine and Community Oriented Programs (CIMCO) for eight years and was FIMA’s Deputy Secretary General from 2007 to 2016.

An accomplished academic, Prof. Iqbal Khan has authored over 100 research publications and several books in vascular surgery, ethics, and medical education. He developed fellowship programs in vascular surgery, founded the Society of Vascular Surgeons of Pakistan, and has been associated with various international bodies including the European Society of Vascular Surgeons and the World Association for Bioethics.

Over the years, he has also played a leading role in relief and charity healthcare projects in Pakistan and abroad. PIMA expressed confidence that his election as FIMA President will further strengthen Pakistan’s representation in global medical forums and advance healthcare collaboration across the Muslim world.
