SHCC Seals Illegal Hospital in Karachi After Mpox Case Reported in 20-Day-Old Infant

KARACHI, October 20: The Sindh Healthcare Commission (SHCC) has sealed Ibn-e-Hassan Hospital in Malir 15, Korangi district, following a report of a laboratory-confirmed mpox case in a 20-day-old infant.

According to the SHCC, the District Health Officer (DHO), Korangi, reported the case, prompting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the infant’s infection.

The initial report stated that the infant had allegedly contracted the infection after circumcision was performed using contaminated scissors at the facility. The infant’s sample was tested at Dow Laboratory, where it reportedly tested positive for mpox.

Following the report, SHCC officials, with the support of the DHO Korangi and SSP Korangi, conducted an operation against the facility, located within the jurisdiction of Saudabad Police Station.

The commission said the hospital was operating illegally and that unqualified staff and quacks were involved in medical procedures.

According to the SHCC, its team faced resistance during the operation, and additional individuals were allegedly called in an attempt to obstruct the officials from performing their duties. Police assistance was sought to bring the situation under control, after which the facility was sealed.

The action was taken over poor hygiene, inadequate infection prevention and control (IPC) measures, and alleged medical malpractice, which the commission said posed serious risks to patient safety and public health.
