Three New Polio Cases Confirmed in Pakistan, Total Rises to 17 in 2025

ISLAMABAD – The National Institute of Health (NIH) in Islamabad has confirmed three new polio cases in Pakistan, with infections reported from Lakki Marwat, North Waziristan (both in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), and Umerkot (Sindh). The newly infected children include a 15-month-old girl, a six-month-old girl, and a five-year-old boy.

With these cases, the total number of polio cases in Pakistan in 2025 has climbed to 17 — including 10 from KP, five from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan.

Health officials reiterate that polio is an incurable disease, and the only protection is repeated vaccination of every child under five during each campaign. Parents are urged to ensure their children receive the oral polio vaccine (OPV) and inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) during the ongoing immunization drives.

The nationwide polio campaign is underway from July 21 to 27, while a special IPV-OPV drive began in Chaman on July 21 and will launch in other Balochistan districts from July 28.

Authorities warn that unvaccinated children are at risk of lifelong disability and can also pose a danger to others. Parents’ cooperation is critical in the fight to eradicate polio from Pakistan.
