Strong tremors jolt northwestern Pakistan after fresh quake in Afghanistan

Islamabad: A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan late Wednesday night, sending strong tremors across northwestern Pakistan and creating panic in several cities.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the quake originated at 21:56 PST at a depth of 111 kilometers, with its epicenter located at latitude 35.12°N and longitude 70.71°E in the Hindu Kush region.

The tremors were strongly felt in Peshawar, Mansehra, Hangu, Abbottabad, Swat, Attock, Malakand, Rawalpindi, and Islamabad, forcing residents to rush out of homes and buildings in fear. No immediate reports of casualties or damage were received from Pakistan.

This comes only days after Afghanistan was devastated by a massive earthquake that killed over 2,205 people and injured more than 4,000, raising alarm over aftershocks and fresh seismic activity in the region.

Authorities are monitoring the situation closely while emergency services remain on alert.
