Prof Javed Akram becomes first Pakistani doctor to win prestigious fellowship from Ceylon College of Physicians

Islamabad: In a landmark recognition for Pakistan’s medical fraternity, Professor Javed Akram has been honoured as the first Pakistani physician to receive the prestigious fellowship award from the Ceylon College of Physicians in Sri Lanka. The accolade was conferred during the 58th Anniversary Annual Academic Sessions of the College, where Prof Akram was invited as a distinguished guest.

Prof Javed Akram, a renowned physician, academic and researcher, has made remarkable contributions to medical education, clinical research and healthcare leadership in Pakistan. A former federal health minister and Vice Chancellor of the University of Health Sciences (UHS) Lahore, he has played a pivotal role in modernizing medical curricula, strengthening research capacity, and mentoring a new generation of doctors.

Over the course of his career, Prof Akram has led several landmark clinical studies, including large-scale COVID-19 vaccine trials in Pakistan, and has been a consistent advocate for evidence-based medicine and patient-centered care. His work has not only advanced medical science within Pakistan but also fostered international collaborations that brought global recognition to the country’s medical research.

As President of the Society for Novel and Rare Diseases (SNARE), he has been instrumental in raising awareness about genetic disorders, pushing for mandatory genetic testing before cousin marriages, and expanding access to specialized care for children suffering from rare conditions.

Prof Akram’s fellowship by the Ceylon College of Physicians is being seen as both a personal milestone and a collective achievement for Pakistan’s medical community, symbolizing its growing role in global health and medical scholarship.
