Shifa joins world’s elite academic medical centers with prestigious JCI accreditation

Islamabad: Shifa International Hospitals Limited has achieved Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation as an Academic Medical Center (AMC), becoming one of fewer than 70 healthcare institutions worldwide to hold the prestigious distinction and placing Pakistan among a select group of countries with multiple internationally accredited academic medical centers.

The accreditation recognizes healthcare institutions that meet stringent international standards not only in patient care but also in medical education, research governance and institutional quality systems. Healthcare experts regard JCI Academic Medical Center accreditation as one of the highest levels of international recognition available to hospitals engaged in clinical care, teaching and research.

Shifa International announced that it achieved full compliance across all evaluated standards during the accreditation process, with the assessment’s SAFER risk matrix showing no significant findings, reflecting adherence to internationally benchmarked quality and patient safety requirements.

The development marks a significant milestone for Pakistan’s healthcare sector, which has increasingly sought international recognition for its clinical services, medical training programmes and research capabilities.

Officials at Shifa said the accreditation validates years of investment in strengthening patient safety systems, academic programmes and research infrastructure aimed at bringing the institution in line with globally recognized standards.

With the latest accreditation, Pakistan now has two institutions holding JCI Academic Medical Center status, the other being the Aga Khan University Hospital. Health experts say this places Pakistan among a limited number of developing countries with more than one hospital operating at this level of international academic and clinical recognition.

Academic Medical Centers occupy a unique position within healthcare systems by integrating three core functions: patient care, education and research. Unlike conventional hospitals that primarily focus on treatment, AMCs are expected to demonstrate excellence in clinical services while simultaneously training healthcare professionals and conducting research under internationally accepted ethical and governance frameworks.

Healthcare leaders say such institutions play a critical role in producing future physicians, nurses and researchers while contributing to scientific knowledge through clinical and biomedical research.

Shifa officials noted that the accreditation means patients are being treated within a healthcare system validated against internationally recognized quality standards, while medical students, residents and healthcare professionals receive training in an environment that meets global academic benchmarks.

The accreditation is also expected to strengthen opportunities for international collaboration in medical education and research. Experts believe internationally recognized governance structures can facilitate partnerships with leading healthcare institutions, research organizations and universities around the world.

Hospital leadership described the achievement as the culmination of sustained efforts by clinicians, educators, researchers and administrators to build an institution where healthcare delivery, medical education and scientific inquiry operate within a single integrated framework.

They maintained that the recognition demonstrates Pakistan’s growing capacity to contribute to global medical knowledge and innovation rather than merely adopting advances developed elsewhere.

Health sector observers say the achievement reflects the gradual maturation of Pakistan’s healthcare infrastructure and may encourage other institutions in the country to pursue internationally recognized quality and accreditation standards.

The accreditation comes at a time when Pakistani healthcare institutions are increasingly seeking international certifications to improve patient safety, clinical outcomes, research quality and academic excellence, while enhancing the country’s reputation in global healthcare and medical education.

With fewer than 70 institutions worldwide holding JCI Academic Medical Center accreditation, Shifa’s inclusion in the select group represents a notable achievement for both the hospital and Pakistan’s broader healthcare sector.
