Karachi: A 20-year-old newlywed woman named Shanti, a resident of Lyari, has tragically succumbed to her injuries after enduring horrific abuse by her husband. Shanti had been receiving intensive care in the ICU of the Benazir Bhutto Trauma Center for the past month, where doctors made every effort to save her life.
Shanti was married just a month ago, on June 15, to a man named Ashok. On their wedding night, she was subjected to brutal physical and sexual assault by her husband.
According to Shanti’s mother, Sona, the cruel husband bit her daughter with his teeth, leaving deep wounds all over her body. Cotton was stuffed into the wounds, which became infected and emitted a foul odor.
Shanti was initially taken to Lyari General Hospital in critical condition and later shifted to a private hospital. As her condition worsened, she was moved to the Benazir Bhutto Trauma Center, where she remained in ICU-3 for a month under intensive care.
Dr. Sabir Memon, Executive Director of the Trauma Center, confirmed that the 20-year-old patient had been placed on a ventilator at the request of Lyari General Hospital. Shanti had been sexually assaulted by her husband, Ashok. She was earlier treated at Lyari General and then at a private hospital, where exploratory laparotomy and ileostomy surgeries were performed. Due to her deteriorating condition, she was transferred to the Trauma Center.
The administration of the Benazir Bhutto Trauma Center has confirmed her death.
Baghdadi Police Station has arrested the husband, Ashok, son of Shiv Kumar, and registered a case under Sections 376-B (rape) and 324 (attempted murder) of the Pakistan Penal Code.
According to police, Shanti’s wedding took place on June 15, 2025. Just two days later, on June 17, she was admitted to the hospital after being subjected to severe physical and sexual abuse. The FIR states that on the wedding night, her husband repeatedly beat her and bit her sensitive body parts.
The report confirms there were visible signs of violence on the victim’s body, which have been verified by medical professionals. Ashok has been taken into custody, and legal proceedings are underway.
