Shifa marks World Lung Day with focus on asthma, COPD, TB and palliative care

Islamabad: Shifa International Hospital observed World Lung Day on Thursday with an awareness session under the theme “Healthy Lungs, Healthy Life,” bringing together pulmonologists, healthcare professionals and patients to highlight challenges in respiratory health.

Led by Dr. Murtaza Kazmi, Chief of Pulmonology and Activity Director, the session featured talks on global updates in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), practical approaches to diagnosing pleural effusion, updated treatment protocols for pulmonary embolism, and the complexities of managing tuberculosis in immunocompromised patients.

Adding a patient perspective, individuals living with chronic lung conditions shared their experiences, stressing the importance of early diagnosis, timely treatment and continued support.

A panel discussion on palliative care, joined by Dr. Naghman Bashir of the Pakistan Chest Society, underlined the need for care models that focus not only on treatment but also on the quality of life of patients and their families.

Shifa officials said their Pulmonology Department offers a complete range of advanced services, including a One-stop Pleural Clinic for managing pleural diseases and Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS) for accurate, minimally invasive diagnosis of infections and cancers.
