Karachi: The death toll in the tragic fire incident at Gul Plaza in Karachi has risen to 23, after several victims succumbed to severe burn injuries.
According to Police Surgeon Dr. Sumayya Syed, DNA samples from 16 bodies have been collected so far, while six bodies were identifiable through physical features. She said one body was identified as Abdul Hameed through his CNIC and driving license.
Dr. Syed added that DNA samples from 50 family members of the victims have also been obtained to complete the identification process. All collected samples have been sent to the Sindh Forensic DNA Laboratory at the University of Karachi, where DNA cross-matching has already begun.
The police surgeon said that some remains were brought in the form of body parts, making the identification process more complicated. Due to this, no definite timeline can be provided.
She explained that extreme heat denatures DNA, which makes forensic analysis difficult. As a result, DNA reports may take additional time to be finalized.
