Karachi: The Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Sindh, in collaboration with UNICEF, organized a media briefing at Hotel One Karachi to raise awareness about the upcoming Measles and Rubella (MR) vaccination campaign. The event was attended by health experts and representatives from various media organizations.
During the session, it was announced that the nationwide Measles and Rubella immunization campaign will be conducted from November 17 to November 29, targeting children aged six months to five years. The initiative aims to protect children from these highly contagious and potentially life-threatening diseases.
Health experts emphasized that measles is a viral infection characterized by high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a rash that spreads from the face to the body. If left untreated, it can lead to serious complications. Experts urged parents to ensure their children are vaccinated on time to safeguard their health and future.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Sohail Raza Sheikh, Additional Project Director, EPI Sindh, highlighted the pivotal role of the media in shaping parental decisions about immunization.
Media is not just a messenger, it is a partner in saving lives.
Every accurate story and every positive message shared can help protect children from deadly diseases, said Dr. Sheikh.
He further stressed that under the Sindh Immunization and Epidemics Control Act 2023, vaccination of children is mandatory, and Section 9 of the Act defines refusal or obstruction as a punishable offense.
Other notable participants included Dr. Arsalan Memon (M&E Officer, EPI Sindh), Dr. Mahboob (Provincial Surveillance Officer, EPI Sindh), Dr. Zaid bin Arif (Immunization Officer, UNICEF Sindh), and Dr. Khalid Shafi (Child Health Expert, UNICEF), who responded to media queries during the session.
Health experts reiterated their commitment to eradicating measles and rubella in Sindh through collaborative efforts among parents, the media, and healthcare institutions.
