Another mpox case in Karachi as tally rises to 33, officials say situation ‘under control’

Karachi: A fresh case of mpox has been reported in Karachi, taking the city’s total to eight, while Sindh has recorded 33 infections so far, health authorities said on Friday, maintaining that the outbreak remains contained due to ongoing response measures.

According to the Sindh health department, the latest case was confirmed in Karachi, pushing the number of affected individuals in the provincial capital to eight. Officials said that across Sindh, a total of 33 mpox cases have been detected, with the highest concentration reported from Khairpur district.

Data shared by health authorities shows that 22 of the 33 cases have emerged from Khairpur, making it the epicentre of the outbreak in the province. However, officials noted that no new case has been reported from the district over the past five days, suggesting a possible slowdown in transmission.

In Sukkur, at least three cases of mpox have also been confirmed so far, indicating the spread of the virus beyond a single district but within a controlled range, according to officials.

The Sindh health department described the overall situation as manageable, attributing the containment to timely interventions and targeted public health measures aimed at limiting further transmission.

As part of the response, more than 50 healthcare workers in Sukkur have undergone specialised training to improve early detection, patient management and infection control practices. Officials said this capacity building effort is aimed at strengthening frontline response in affected areas.

In addition, infection prevention and control audits have been completed at major healthcare facilities in Sukkur and Khairpur. These audits were conducted to assess and improve hygiene standards and safety protocols within hospitals, particularly in high risk settings.

Authorities said special precautions have been enforced in neonatal and critical care units, where patients are considered more vulnerable, to prevent any potential spread of the virus within healthcare facilities.

Health officials said surveillance of the situation is ongoing, with continuous monitoring and response measures in place to protect both the public and healthcare workers.

Citizens have been advised to follow precautionary guidelines and seek immediate medical attention in case of suspected symptoms, as authorities attempt to prevent further spread of the virus.
