Karachi Metropolitan University Jointly Inaugurates Girls Common Room

Karachi — Karachi Metropolitan University reached an important milestone in its ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive, student centered campus with the formal inauguration of a dedicated Girls Common Room, addressing a long standing need for female students.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Wasim Qazi emphasized that modern universities must evolve beyond teaching and research to meet students’ everyday needs. He said the Girls Common Room reflects the university’s broader commitment to strengthening student support systems and ensuring that female students have access to facilities that protect their dignity, wellbeing, and academic focus.
Secretary Sindh Higher Education Commission Noman Ahsan, who jointly led the inauguration, praised the initiative: “Improving standards of education is not limited to the classroom; providing a safe and facilitative environment for students is an essential part of that standard. Karachi Metropolitan University’s step not only addresses basic needs of female students but will also bolster their confidence and academic endeavors. We will encourage such efforts at every level, as they send a positive message to future generations.”
The Vice Chancellor further highlighted that institutional transformation requires sustained attention to the full student experience, adding that the creation of supportive and respectful campus spaces is central to the university’s vision.
The Girls Common Room has been designed as a multifunctional space with comfortable seating for relaxation between classes, private study corners, lockers, mobile charging points, and information displays. A designated prayer area is also provided to accommodate students’ needs for quiet reflection.
The inauguration comes amid a broader phase of institutional change that began in August 2024, when the college transitioned into a full fledged university. Despite limited financial resources, the administration has implemented several practical measures to strengthen academic systems and campus facilities, including the first ever computerized examinations in the institution’s history, staff capacity building, improved administrative systems, and timely salary disbursements.
Campus infrastructure improvements have included a newly developed library, additional washrooms, and the installation of a Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant to ensure a reliable supply of clean drinking water for students and staff. These changes reflect a focused agenda of gradual yet meaningful improvements, with further initiatives planned to enhance academic infrastructure and student services.
The formal inauguration was attended by Noman Ahsan (Secretary, Sindh Higher Education Commission), Prof. Dr. Wasim Qazi (Vice Chancellor, KMU), Dr. Riffat Farrukh (Principal, Karachi Medical & Dental College), deans, department chairpersons, faculty, administrative officers, and students.
Students and faculty welcomed the new facility. “For many of us, this is more than just a room,” said a medical student. “It is a space where we can rest between classes, prepare for lectures, and feel comfortable on campus.” Another student added, “The establishment of the Girls Common Room shows that the university administration is listening to the needs of female students. It makes us feel acknowledged and valued.”
Faculty members noted that the common room represents a positive step toward enhancing the campus environment and supporting both comfort and productivity for students.
